I love this! I love the design that you used too: it reminds me of a deep-water fish called the oarfish. I'm going off memory here, but I remembered reading something in Chinese mythology that mermaids have red/orange hair that is long and flowing, large black eyes, and no fluke to speak of - just like the oarfish - and your painting! I love it! :D

There are two things I especially love about this mermaid...

(1) she has Gills - I've always wondered how other mermaids don't suffocate under the water!

(2) She has an unusual tail - more eel-like than fish. There are so many other areas of inspiration in the ocean.

She is beautiful and believable, The webbed hands make sense too - extra propulsion. The colours are mostly camouflaged against the deep, with the lovely contrast of the gold.

you said that better then anyone else could your absolutly right I love this like in the little mermaid ariel didn't have gills, webbed hands, or anything like that, i was like nope not a mermaid just a girl with a fish tail, she would survive without any gills lol i like unusual tails it has a i don't know a specialness to it

Is she an eel, or a sea snake?

Extremely realistic eel mermaid, love the body, the gill placement, the coloration and webbed fingers. A definite favorite!

I love the eel interpretation. Much more rare than the traditional tail. And the almost cheetah print; I've never seen that on a mermaid before. :) I think a little blending could have been used on her shoulders. You've done a wonderful job on her anatomy; everything seems even and well painted. The lines to the right of the end of her tail are a VERY nice touch! It did not go unnoticed. =) The only thing I don't like about this piece is the light, over-friendliness of it. Traditionally mermaids have sinister wants, and since this is of an eel depiction, I would think a much more neutral or even angry/creepy expression with dramatic lighting would have fit very nicely. But it's just a personal opinion. Good work.

lovely! I like how it's not the traditional mermaid!

Great concept! Very well executed. I'm amazed that this doesn't have more favs.

I like her. We seem to have been thinking along similar lines years and years apart.

Hey, this is great! I really like how you didn't go with a "generic" fish tail. It's more Eel-shaped, that's neat!
Linzee777 Featured By Owner Mar 17, 2010
i meant to add it as a fave but put it in my stock use folder by accident..sorry!!!ignore that...gorgeous picture!!!

I really like the fish-tail - and colors. She is so unique and very beautifully done. The light on her back is esp. wonderful and I would like to see that also on her hair.

The blending of the colours here is beautifully done. I also like the way the light hits her back and how the overall picture has such a mystical feeling to it. :)
